In a recent edition of Atrial Fibrillation – Research Review, research regarding Chocolate consumption and risk of atrial fibrillation was discussed.
‘The association between chocolate consumption and AF risk was explored in two Swedish cohorts of men (n=40,009) and women (n=32,486). AF was diagnosed in 9978 individuals during mean follow-up of 14.6 years. No significant association was seen between chocolate consumption of ≥3–4 servings per week and AF (adjusted HR 0.96 [95% CI 0.88–1.04]).
Similarly, no significant associations were seen between chocolate consumption and AF in a random-effects meta-analysis of five cohort studies that included 180,454 participants with 16,356 AF cases (respective HRs for 2 servings per week and for the highest versus lowest consumption category, 0.97 [95% CI 0.94–1.01] and 0.96 [0.90–1.03]).
Similar to the coffee studies, chocolate consumption does NOT predispose to AF and if anything might be associated with a reduced incidence of CV disease including AF, as seen in other research. No comment can be made regarding the type of chocolate (i.e. milk versus dark).
